In this post, I hope to highlight the importance of including professional photography when planning your family’s special moments. Even though you may not feel like you want to be photographed, capturing these moments while being able to remain present in them as they happen is something you will surely not regret!
When I was asked to be the one to take the first pictures of Alisha and Lee’s new son, I was honoured and excited to be the one to capture this special moment. We discussed what she was looking for ahead of time, and she shared her desire to really freeze the moment that her older daughter, Aurora, met her new brother, Theodore, for the very first time.
I love the idea of candidly capturing unique emotion – and that was exactly what we did! This was an experience and a moment that will never happen again, and my focus for this shoot was to capture this moment “through Aurora’s eyes”. This is the importance of professional photography – this mom was able to stay fully present in this moment while I handled capturing it all for her to look back on. There was so much anticipation in the room as we all waited for Aurora to return home and walk through the door to her new brother.
As Aurora came through the door, there was such a sense of curiosity and uncertainty on her face – why are all of these people here? – why is everyone so quiet?. She was met at the door by mom and dad who explained that her new brother, Theodore, was here!
As Aurora walked in, she slowly peered around the corner and approached her sleeping brother – not too sure at first what to make of this new addition to her family.
Mom and dad did such a wonderful job explaining to Aurora that she is now a big sister and has a very important role! When she was ready, they offered for Aurora to hold her new brother.
These photos still make me emotional when I look back at them, and I can so clearly remember being in this room and the feeling that was there! This is why I fell so in love with photography – specifically lifestyle photography. It is such a gift to not only be able to freeze a moment in time, but to freeze a feeling that you can re-feel every time you look at a photo is truly remarkable. Like listening to a song that always brings up a happy, or sad, memory. These photos tell a story, a story that both children will be able to look back on one day and remember what it was like, through Aurora’s eyes.
Alisha and Lee, thank you for letting me be part of your special moments.
